This month, Bevan Buckland is celebrating a significant milestone as Director Johnathan Dight marks 20 years with the firm. Since joining in 2006, John has built strong relationships with clients across a wide range of sectors, supporting businesses, charities and not-for-profit organisations through growth, change and new challenges.
To mark the occasion, John reflects on the clients, experiences and lessons that have shaped his career over the past two decades.
A Personal Reflection
As I approach 20 years with Bevan Buckland, it feels like a good opportunity for me to reflect on my journey so far and the relationships I’ve built along the way.
Since joining the firm in 2006, I’ve had the privilege of working with a wide range of organisations across South Wales and beyond, and whilst my experience spans many sectors such as retail, construction, manufacturing and healthcare, a significant part of my career has been dedicated to supporting charities and not-for-profit organisations.
A lesson I’ve learned over the years is that accountancy is rarely just about the numbers. Whether working with a charity trustee, business owner or finance director, understanding the people behind an organisation is often just as important as understanding the financial information.
One of the things I enjoy most about working in the sector is building long-term relationships and developing a real understanding of each organisation. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with some amazing trustees, management teams and finance professionals. I’ve learned a great deal from these individuals and their commitment to making a positive impact within their communities.
Whilst it’s nice to reflect on the last 20 years, I’m just as excited about what comes next. More recently, I’ve been helping clients prepare for the changes being introduced through the updated Charity SORP. This has included delivering trustee training tailored to individual organisations, presenting at Gofod3 on the key changes being implemented, and helping charities understand what the changes mean for them and how best to prepare.
What Do Clients Say?
I’m incredibly grateful to all the clients who have trusted me over the years and for the kind feedback I have received along the way. A few recent comments include:
‘Johnathan combines exceptional technical accounting knowledge with a genuine interest in understanding our organisation and the challenges we face. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, he takes the time to understand how we operate, allowing him to provide advice that is practical, proportionate and relevant to our circumstances.
‘Friendly, approachable and responsive, Johnathan is someone we feel comfortable turning to for advice on complex matters. He explains technical issues clearly, works collaboratively, and consistently brings a pragmatic perspective that helps us make informed decisions. His expertise, insight and practical approach have been highly valued by our organisation, and we greatly appreciate the support he provides.’
Miranda McGinn, WCVA
‘I’ve had the pleasure of working with Johnathan for several years. He balances a strong technical professionalism and a truly supportive, collaborative style. The guidance Johnathan provides consistently delivers meaningful, lasting positive change. I highly recommend Johnathan to any organisation looking for trusted audit and accountancy services.’
Stephanie Garbutt, Children in Wales
I am particularly pleased that both comments highlight the same combination: strong technical knowledge and a supportive, collaborative approach.
Looking Ahead
I look forward to continuing to support existing clients and to building relationships with new organisations across the not-for-profit sector.
