Accountant For Small Business Services Across Wales and the UK
Accounting, tax and advisory support built around your business, not the other way around. From sole traders to growing SMEs, we help you stay compliant, plan ahead and keep more of what you earn.
Accountancy That Works as Hard as You Do
Running a small business takes everything you’ve got. Between winning customers, managing staff, and keeping the wheels turning, your accounts and tax obligations can easily slip down the list. And when they do, the consequences can be expensive.
That’s where having the right accountant makes all the difference. Not just someone who files your returns on time (though we absolutely do that), but a trusted adviser who understands your business, spots problems before they become costly, and helps you make smarter financial decisions as you grow.
Bevan Buckland is Wales’ largest independent chartered accountancy firm, with over 125 years of experience working with businesses of every size and sector. We’re ICAEW-regulated, with chartered accountants, chartered tax advisers and a full in-house team covering everything from bookkeeping to business exit planning. And because we’re independent, every decision is made locally by people who know your market.
Whether you’re a sole trader working from your kitchen table or an owner-manager with a team of twenty, we’ll build an accounting package around what you actually need.
What We Do for Small Businesses
Accounts Preparation and Filing
Every limited company has to file annual accounts with Companies House and a corporation tax return with HMRC. We prepare both, making sure they’re accurate, compliant and filed well before the deadline. For sole traders and partnerships, we handle your Self Assessment tax returns with the same level of care and attention to detail.
We don’t just produce the numbers, though. When your accounts are ready, we’ll sit down with you to talk through what they’re telling us. Where your margins are strong, where costs are creeping up, and what to keep an eye on in the year ahead.
Tax Planning and Compliance
Tax is one of the biggest costs your business faces. We help you manage it proactively rather than reactively. Our chartered tax advisers review your affairs regularly to make sure you’re claiming all available reliefs and allowances, structured in the most tax-efficient way, and not paying a penny more than you need to.
That includes corporation tax, income tax, capital gains tax, and VAT. If your circumstances change, whether you’re bringing on a business partner, purchasing premises, or thinking about retirement, we’ll make sure your tax planning keeps pace.
VAT Returns and Advice
VAT can trip up even experienced business owners. We prepare and submit your quarterly VAT returns, advise on the right VAT scheme for your business (flat rate, cash accounting or standard), and help you avoid common pitfalls like late registration or incorrect claims. If HMRC raises a query, we deal with it on your behalf.
Bookkeeping and Cloud Accounting
Good records are the foundation of everything. If your bookkeeping is a mess, your accounts will be late, your tax position unclear, and your cash flow impossible to manage. We offer bookkeeping support tailored to your needs, from full monthly management to a periodic review of your own entries.
As a Xero Gold Partner, we also help you set up and get the most from cloud accounting software. Xero gives you real-time access to your finances from anywhere, automated bank feeds, easy invoicing and a clear picture of where your money is going. We’ll get you up and running and provide ongoing support so you’re never stuck.
Payroll
Once you start employing people, payroll becomes a recurring obligation. We process payroll for small businesses across Wales and the UK, handling RTI submissions to HMRC, payslips, year-end P60s, P11Ds and auto-enrolment pension compliance. You’ll know your staff are paid correctly and on time, every time.
Management Accounts and Cash Flow Forecasting
You shouldn’t have to wait until year-end to know how your business is performing. We produce regular management accounts that give you a clear, up-to-date picture of your profit and loss, balance sheet and cash position. For businesses planning an investment, applying for funding or managing seasonal cash flow, we also prepare detailed forecasts that help you make confident decisions.
Making Tax Digital (MTD) Readiness
Making Tax Digital is changing how businesses report to HMRC. MTD for VAT is already in effect, and MTD for Income Tax is rolling out from April 2026 for qualifying sole traders and landlords. We help you choose compatible software, set up digital record-keeping, and prepare for quarterly reporting so the transition is smooth rather than stressful.
Business Advisory and Growth Support
This is where the real value of a good accountant shows up. Beyond compliance, we act as a sounding board for your business decisions. Thinking about taking on your first employee? Expanding into new premises? Considering whether a limited company structure is right for you? We’ve helped thousands of small businesses work through exactly these questions over the years, and we’ll give you clear, practical advice based on your specific circumstances.
Who We Work With
Why Choose Bevan Buckland as Your Small Business Accountant
Wales’ Largest Independent Firm, With a Personal Touch
We have the resources and breadth of expertise you’d expect from a large firm, but because we’re independent, you’ll never be treated as a number. Decisions are made locally by partners who live and work in your community, and you’ll always have a named contact who knows your business inside out.
A Dedicated Contact for Every Client
When you call us, you’ll speak to someone who already understands your situation. Every client is assigned a dedicated contact who manages your affairs and draws on the wider Bevan Buckland team when specialist input is needed. No call centres, no explaining your story from scratch each time.
Over 125 Years of Experience Supporting Welsh Businesses
We’ve been advising businesses in Wales since the 1890s. That’s five generations of building knowledge, relationships, and a reputation that speaks for itself. We’ve seen economic cycles come and go, and we’ve helped our clients through every one of them.
Everything Under One Roof
Most small business accountants offer accounts and tax returns. We go further. Because we have chartered tax advisers, registered auditors, a licensed insolvency practitioner and a full advisory team all under one roof, you’ll never need to brief another firm when your needs evolve. Whether it’s R&D tax credits, estate planning, business exit strategy or an HMRC investigation, we handle it all.
Deep Roots Across South and West Wales
With offices in Swansea, Haverfordwest, Pembroke, Cowbridge and Carmarthen, we’re genuinely local. Our partners and staff live in the communities we serve. We understand the Welsh business landscape, from tech startups emerging from Swansea University to family businesses in Pembrokeshire and manufacturing firms in the Valleys. And for clients outside Wales, we work just as effectively online and over the phone.
Transparent, Agreed Fees
We agree your fee upfront, and it covers all your routine queries by phone and email at no extra cost. You’ll never hesitate to pick up the phone because you’re worried about the bill. We’re not the cheapest accountant you’ll find, and there’s a good reason: the advice we deliver consistently saves our clients more than it costs.
How It Works
Step 1: Book a free, no-obligation consultation. We’ll learn about your business, your current setup and what you’re looking to achieve.
Step 2: We provide a clear proposal and fixed fee quote tailored to the services you need, with no hidden extras.
Step 3: Your dedicated contact takes care of everything going forward, from day-to-day compliance to proactive tax planning and business advice whenever you need it.
Small Business Accountant Fees
We believe you should know what you’re paying before you commit. Our fees are fixed and agreed upfront, so there are no surprises.*
What you pay depends on the complexity of your business, the services you need, and how hands-on you want us to be. Some clients just need annual accounts and a tax return. Others want full bookkeeping, payroll, management accounts and advisory support. We’ll build a package that fits your business and your budget.
Not sure what you need? Contact us for a free consultation and we’ll recommend the right level of support for your situation.
*Additional fees will include anything outside the agreed scope of work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Strictly speaking, there’s no legal requirement for a sole trader or small limited company to hire an accountant. But in practice, most business owners find that a good accountant saves them far more than they cost. An accountant ensures your tax returns are accurate and filed on time, helps you claim all available reliefs and deductions, and provides the kind of strategic advice that’s difficult to get anywhere else. If you’re spending hours on your accounts each week, missing deadlines, or unsure whether your tax is right, it’s almost certainly time to get professional support.
Fees vary widely depending on the size of your business, the services you need, and the firm you choose. For a sole trader with a straightforward tax return, you might pay a few hundred pounds a year. At Bevan Buckland, we agree a fixed fee upfront so you always know what you’re paying, and all routine queries are included at no extra charge.
As a sole trader, you and your business are legally the same entity. You keep all the profits after tax, but you’re personally liable for any debts. A limited company is a separate legal entity, which offers liability protection and can be more tax-efficient for higher earners, particularly through the way you structure salary and dividends. The right choice depends on your circumstances, and it’s one of the most common things we help clients work through.
For most small businesses, yes. Cloud accounting platforms like Xero give you real-time access to your financial data, automate bank reconciliation, simplify invoicing and make it much easier for your accountant to support you throughout the year rather than just at year-end. As a Xero Gold Partner, we help clients set up and get the most from the platform, including training and ongoing support.
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s programme to move tax reporting online. MTD for VAT is already compulsory for all VAT-registered businesses. MTD for Income Tax will apply to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income from April 2026, requiring quarterly digital updates instead of a single annual return. We’re helping clients prepare now so the change feels manageable when it arrives.
Absolutely. Switching accountants is more straightforward than most people expect. We handle the process for you, including contacting your previous accountant to obtain your records. There are no tax implications to switching, and you can do it at any point during the year. Most clients are fully up and running within a couple of weeks.
We work with small businesses across a wide range of industries, including construction, manufacturing, technology, creative industries, retail and e-commerce, healthcare, tourism, agriculture and professional services. Our team has particular depth of experience in the sectors that drive the Welsh economy, but we support clients right across the UK.
Yes. We offer a free initial meeting with no obligation. It’s a chance for us to learn about your business and for you to ask any questions you have. We’ll discuss what support you need and provide a clear quote before you commit to anything. You can meet us at any of our five offices, or we can arrange a video call if that’s easier.
Our team includes ICAEW Chartered Accountants (ACA/FCA), Chartered Tax Advisers (CTA), and members of the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT). We also have registered auditors and a licensed insolvency practitioner. All of our accountants are either fully qualified or studying towards a professional qualification, and we invest heavily in ongoing training through our in-house training academy.
Yes. HMRC enquiries can be stressful, but they’re something we deal with regularly. We’ll handle all correspondence with HMRC on your behalf, review your records, and work to resolve the enquiry as quickly and favourably as possible. Having a chartered accountancy firm in your corner makes a significant difference to both the process and the outcome.
