In our latest 'Meet the Team' feature, we interviewed Ffion Williams, who has recently joined the firm as an Associate Executive. Ffion shares her passion for accountancy, outlines her career journey so far, and discusses the skills necessary for success in the industry.

Q: Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I studied Mathematics at Swansea University, which sparked my passion for working with numbers. After graduating, I began my career in audit and accounts, where I’ve developed a keen interest in financial reporting and assurance. I’m currently part-qualified and working towards my ACA qualification.

Q: How did you first get into accountancy?

My interest in accountancy began at a young age, inspired by my dad, who was a qualified accountant and worked in the local council. I was always interested in his work and knew early on that I wanted to follow a similar path. That motivation stayed with me throughout my studies and led me to pursue a career in auditing and accounting.

Q: How long have you been at Bevan Buckland, and what’s your current role?

I joined Bevan Buckland just over a month ago, and I’m currently working as an Associate Executive.

Q: What does a typical day look like in your role?

My day typically involves a mixture of audit and accounts work. I spend a significant amount of time on audit testing, which involves examining financial records, verifying transactions, and ensuring compliance with relevant accounting standards and regulations. A key part of my role involves Solicitors’ Accounts Rules (SAR) audits, and I also assist with preparing draft accounts. The variety of tasks and industries we work with makes each day interesting and helps me continue growing both technically and professionally.

Q: What do you find most interesting/rewarding about your work?

I have the opportunity to meet clients from a diverse range of industries and gain insight into how their businesses operate. Each client has a unique perspective, and I enjoy building relationships while helping them improve their business.

Q: How would you describe your early days at the firm?

Although I haven’t been at Bevan Buckland for long, I already feel incredibly settled. Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive, and there’s a real sense of teamwork and community. It’s clear that people genuinely want to help each other succeed, and that creates a positive atmosphere that makes coming to work enjoyable.

Q: What skills are the most crucial to succeeding in this career?

One of the most important skills in accountancy is commitment. The qualification is challenging and requires a lot of dedication, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Staying focused and motivated through the exams and practical experience is key. Additionally, possessing strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to work well both independently and collaboratively are all essential for success in this field.

Q: What one piece of advice would you give an aspiring accountant/someone just starting their career?

Go for it! If you enjoy working with numbers and solving problems, accountancy can be a fun and rewarding career. It might seem challenging at times, especially with the qualifications, but the sense of achievement and the variety of opportunities make it all worthwhile.
