For our latest ‘Meet the Team’ feature, we caught up with Tina Davies, our experienced Payroll Manager, who shares insights from her remarkable 38 year career in payroll. Tina discusses how she first got started in the profession, what a typical day looks like, and what continues to inspire her in her role.

Q: Please tell me a bit about yourself.

I have dedicated over 38 years to Payroll and am deeply passionate about the field. I earned my CIPP qualification 13 years ago and actively maintain my membership, staying updated on new legislation. Outside of work, I am an avid sports fan, particularly football. I have a wonderful family with three children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

Q: How did you first get into Payroll?

I started working at Sainsbury’s on the checkout, and when the office was short-staffed, they asked me to help with Payroll. Back then, we had to count the money and put it in pay packets! I enjoyed the role and decided to pursue it full-time. I then took over managing Payroll at a manufacturing company, which was a big challenge with over 900 employees paid weekly in cash. I introduced a new clocking-in system and switched the payment period to monthly, with payments made directly through BACS (essentially doing myself out of a job). This led to the role becoming part-time. In October 2007, I saw an advert for a Payroll Manager at Bevan Buckland, and I have been here ever since.

Q: What does a typical day look like in your role?

There is no such thing as a typical day! I start by clearing emails, which are constant, and allocating payrolls when clients send in their information. Our team works from a to-do list, and the next available person picks up the tasks. I spend a lot of time consulting with both clients and staff, sending BACS payments to save clients the hassle of paying employees. Additionally, I perform payroll audits for non-payroll clients and provide Sage Payroll training.

Q: What do you find most interesting/rewarding about your work?

Ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time is both highly rewarding and fulfilling. I find auditing Payroll and providing training particularly interesting. It allows me to meet new people and identify potential errors in the payroll process, which can save the company money and prevent penalties. Additionally, streamlining processes to support employers is a key part of improving overall efficiency.

Q: What keeps you at Bevan Buckland?

I love my job most of the time. The location is fantastic, and I have an amazing team. We collaborate effectively, and I couldn’t do it without them.

Q: What skills are the most crucial to succeeding in this career?

For a successful career in Payroll, you need strong problem-solving abilities, in-depth technical payroll knowledge, effective management and leadership skills, excellent communication capabilities, and a keen eye for detail and accuracy.

Q: What advice would you give an aspiring payroll manager/someone just starting their career?

Payroll management involves handling sensitive financial data, so meticulousness is essential. It is crucial to thoroughly review all calculations and entries to ensure accuracy and minimise errors. Additionally, staying up to date with payroll regulations and tax laws is vital, as they can change frequently. Continuous learning is necessary to stay informed about the latest developments, ensure compliance, and provide accurate advice to clients. Pursuing relevant certifications, such as those from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP), can enhance your credentials, demonstrate your expertise, and open doors to new opportunities.
